Gaston Taument

Belgian Club : RSC Anderlecht – 11 games, 1 goal

Previous Clubs : Feyenoord (HOL), Benfica Lisboa (POR)

Later Clubs : OFI Crete (GRE), Rapid Wien (AUT)

International : 15 A-caps with The Netherlands (2 goals)

When Gaston Taument entered the Astridpark in 1998 nobody was doubting the new signing. He had failed at Benfica where he was allowed to leave after less than a season but he was 28 and had had his best year with Feyenoord only the year before?

It turned out differently: the Anderlecht team of 1997/98 was a team that had lost its soul. Not only had they lost their top spot to Club Brugge and RC Genk but even smaller teams like Germinal Ekeren and RC Harelbeke became a threat.

Taument was brought in to give the team more attacking options but the former Dutch talent of the year (1991) couldn’t turn the tide. He only scored once: in the last minute of the last league game of the season he completely mishit a shot but the weird curve surprised Beveren goalie Lemmens. It turned out to be an important goal for the Mauves as it qualified them for European football

It wasn’t the expected breakthrough for Taument. Due to little injuries and a horrible form Taument will only play 4 games for Anderlecht in the 98/99 season and he leaves Anderlecht for OFI Crete at the end of the season.

It would turn out to be a good decision: he has a decent season at Crete and was able to end his career on a high with Rapid Wien.
