The 2014-2015 season was not exactly a hit for the struggling Lierse SK and tellingly so was the transfer of Joan Capdevila. After all, it’s not that common for a Belgian club to attract a World and European champion and when they do there is usually a story attached. And that is especially the case if his wage demands are particularly low.
The former Spanish international was almost 36 when he signed and transferred over from the Indian NorthEast United. He was expected to assist the young guns of Lierse with his experience but a training backlog and minor injuries kept him on the bench or out of the selection altogether for the majority of the regular season. A serious knee injury during the play-offs made it a complete failure. Capdevila would only play 4 games with the yellow-black team and Lierse would narrowly avoid relegation, at the expense of Cercle Brugge.
Capdevila was not given a new contract and afterwards played, for a short period, for Santa Coloma in the Andorran league.
